As Boulder Knoll is not open in the months of June- August, many families ask for ideas about programs to explore for their child during these summer months. Below is a partial list of programs that Boulder Knoll alums have attended, and reported positive experiences. This is by no means a complete list, and the list itself is a work in progress. If we have forgotten something, or you have a recommendation for our list, let us know! And don’t forget to check out your local Parks and Recs and Public Library for local, affordable programs.
One note: The best summer programs fill quickly. Apply early.
Audubon Arts Center at Neighborhood Music School, New Haven. Summer Kinderarts program for 3 1/2-5 1/2 year olds, including “music, dance and art”.
Cheshire Nursery School, Cheshire, CT. Several BKMS families attended this program last summer and loved the outdoor focus.
Common Ground Environment Education Center, New Haven (I know it looks like a drive to get there, but SO worth it!)
Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop, New Haven (Children must be 6 to attend, but worth keeping on your radar for the future!)
Franciscan Life Center Summer Programs, Meriden (Children must be 8 to attend, but keep this in mind for opportunities for land-based programs that include animal care and leadership skills.)
Hartford Stage– Half day program for 3-5 year olds (Day Dreamers) focused on “creative movement, music, story theatre, and puppet play”. For 5-8 year olds (Children’s Cast and Bookends), focus includes” story theatre, creative movement, music, puppetry, and arts and crafts”.
Hamden Hall Summer Programs, Hamden
Holiday Hill Day Camp, Prospect (Includes bus transportation from surrounding towns)
Independent Day School Summer Programs, Middlefield
JCC of Greater New Haven, Woodbridge
Mountain Mist Camp- Meriden YMCA, Meriden
Peabody Museum Summer Programs, New Haven (Must be entering 1st grade)
Camp Sloper- Southington-Cheshire, YMCA, Southington
Everson Soccer Academy Hamden, Woodbridge, Wallingford, and many other locations. Soccer camps for kids as young as 2-5 (Tiger Kixx) and 5 and up. Excellent organization and all inclusive ethic. Brazilian soccer!
New Era Gymnastics , Hamden. For kids ages 5+. This is the home of the famous Ninja Warrior camp as well as lots of other options for kids.
For Older Children:
This may feel far away for children in early childhood, but Boulder Knoll encourages you to consider SLEEP AWAY camp for your older children. The independence and self-confidence that children gain from living and experiencing away from home is impossible to quantify.
Cragged Mountain Farm Freedom, NH. Cragged Mountain Farm (CMF) holds a very special place in Jill’s heart as she grew up there with her brother. Focused on backpacking and canoeing trips, CMF is a family owned and operated camp in the White Mountains that takes children back to a simpler time: No technology, no electricity in the cabins, and no competitive sports programming.
